Historic House Museum Tours and Programs:

We offer guided school tours of both of our historic house museums for school groups of all age levels.

Valentine-Varian House/Museum of Bronx History

The Museum of Bronx History school program consists of:

Elementary

A guided tour around the Museum

A gallery discussion about The Bronx during the American Revolution

An interactive period where students can engage with replica colonial items

A self-guided tour through our rotating galleries

A trip to the gift shop

Intermediate/High School

A guided tour through the Museum

A gallery discussion about The Bronx's role during the American Revolution

A discussion about the issues surrounding the Revolution

A interactive, literacy-based activity through the revolving gallery space

A visit to the gift shop

Cost: $5 per adult, $3 per student

 

The Edgar Allan Poe Cottage

The Edgar Allan Poe Cottage Museum program consists of:

A docent led tour of the Cottage

A gallery talk about Poe's life and times at Fordham

A video about Poe's life

A visit to the gift shop

During our programs we are happy to work with teachers to highlight specific components of Poe's work and life. Please contact us in advance if you have special requests.

Cost: $5 per adult, $3 per student

CLASSROOM WORKSHOPS

A great way to enrich student's experience is to bring them to the Historical Society for special presentations. Our  space can accommodate up to 25 students and 5 adults at a time. These visits last 1 to 1.5 hours and are based around relevant historical themes. Here is a sampling of topics we can provide:

SCHOOL OUTREACH

We are ready, willing, and able to come visit your classroom. We can present all of the programs listed above in the comfort of your home classroom.

NEIGHBORHOOD WALKING TOURS

Walking tours are an excellent way to get students and teachers acclimated to their surrounds and foster a greater appreciation of the history and uniqueness of The Bronx. Tours usually last 2 hours. Here are some neighborhood tours that we offer:

  • Morrisania: From Plantation to Urban Neighborhood
  • Mott Haven: 350 Years of Bronx History in One Neighborhood
  • The Lower Grand Concourse: 149th Street to Yankee Stadium
  • The Upper Grand Concourse: Fordham Road to Bedford Park Blvd.

We can create a walking tour to accommodate any school's neighborhood!

Cost: $250

HOW TO BOOK A RESERVATION

  • All reservations must be booked at least two weeks in advance
  • Please select the primary date you would like to schedule and two extra days in case we cannot accommodate your first choice
  • Please fill out the Reservation PDF and email it to Education@Bronxhistoricalsociety.org
  • To complete your reservation, you must submit a $25 deposit either by check or pay pal at http://shop.bronxhistoricalsociety.org
  • Your reservation is complete once you receive a confirmation email from us
